Easy Iron-on Summer Throw Pillows

With a change in season comes a change in style. Summer brings bright colours, light fabrics, floral prints, and nautical-themed everything. While you’re taking the time to swap out your sweaters for shorts, do the same with your home decor. It’s time to put away the fuzzy blankets and add some summer flair to your space.

These iron-on throw pillows are an affordable, easy way to add a touch of summer to your home. Pillows (especially decorative throw pillows) can cost a pretty penny in-store, so save yourself a few bucks and set aside some time for a family craft night this summer.

To make these summer throw pillows, we ordered the covers and inserts online. Have a family member who loves to sew? Maybe they’ll be willing to help with your summer revamp and make you a few homemade covers – even better. Small pillow inserts aren’t expensive. Buying simple covers and customizing them yourself saves you from the never-ending choices of the pillow aisle and gives you the opportunity to get creative.

We chose to go the nautical route for our pillows, but let your imagination run wild. Seasonal fruit prints like pineapple or watermelon would look great in a breakfast nook, while Hawaiian flowers would add a pop of color to a pool or patio chair. 

We used Cricut Design Space to create nautical text and images, but you could use a program like Illustrator or Indesign too. After you’ve decided on your designs, print them onto transfer paper (we chose blues, reds, and whites to keep in-theme).

Using a Durathon iron, we ironed the text and designs (we did a few of each) onto the pillow covers. Be sure to follow the instructions (for both printing and ironing) on the transfer paper – they will vary by brand.

After the iron-on letters cool, peel them back, stuff your pillows, and get ready to redecorate.

Adding seasonal touches to your home can be affordable and fun. Just put aside a weekend afternoon or a rainy night to craft and get your home decked out for the summer. Like the pillow says, a family craft night shore beats work.
